Breast Reduction Auckland

Breast reduction surgery is a major surgical procedure done to remove excess fat, breast tissue, and skin. People who opt to have breast reduction surgery often face problems that stem from having too large breasts or a breast size that’s not proportional to their bodies.

These problems include back pain, nerve damage, difficulty in mobility, skin irritation from bra straps, chafing under the breasts and difficulty finding the right size of clothes and underwear. Breast reduction surgery is not exclusive to females, either. A significant proportion of patients are males who have gynecomastia. The surgery reduces the size of their enlarged breasts and aims to improve their quality of life.

On the other hand, this procedure is not recommended for:

  • chronic smokers and those with conditions like heart disease and diabetes
  • people with obesity
  • individuals whose breasts aren’t fully developed yet
  • those planning to get pregnant or to lose weight significantly

The Procedure

As with any major surgery, your physician will discuss the procedure and its accompanying risks and benefits. During this consultation, it’s important for you to be transparent about your reasons for getting surgery. You will also be asked for your medical history and examined for any underlying medical conditions.

Be clear about your ideal breast size and shape. Your plastic surgeon will then take photos, measure, and examine your breasts.

The procedure involves the use of a general anaesthetic and can take around 5 hours at the maximum, depending on the amount of work needed. The physician will create a “keyhole” incision around and under the areola. From there, they will remove excess fat, glandular tissue and skin. Your nipple and areola will be repositioned and the incision will be closed with sutures.

Breast augmentation surgery is usually done outpatient, so you can go home on the same day, or you can stay in the hospital overnight. Arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.

Risks And Complications

Just like any other type of plastic surgery, there are always risks and complications involved in breast augmentation, including:

  • scarring
  • swelling and bruising
  • difficulty breastfeeding
  • loss of sensation in the nipples and surrounding area
  • infection

If you feel any swelling or find foul-smelling discharge in the area, report it to your physician immediately.

Recovery

Recovery from breast reduction surgery varies from person to person but here’s what to expect:

  • Your breasts will be covered in dressings immediately after the procedure. You may have to have drainage tubes inserted as well.
  • Physical discomfort, swelling, and a bit of bruising will be present right after the surgery. Your physician will prescribe pain medications and antibiotics to facilitate the healing process. Scarring, while minimal, will be present.
  • Prevent infection by keeping the site clean and dry. Your healthcare provider will teach you how to dress your wounds properly.
  • You may have to wear a compression garment or sports bra for additional support. This also helps prevent fluid accumulation.
  • You will be asked to take one to two weeks of rest before you can return to work. You must not do any strenuous activities during this time. You may regain limited mobility in about 4 weeks.
  • You will be asked to refrain from wearing underwire bras for the entire recovery period, or beyond it, depending on your physician.
